Building the future

You must be lying on a neatly made bed and your hunger satisfied with homemade food but nearly 158 million kids in India are engaged in child labour. Lost hopes and dreams deferred! We all are deeply involved in the thoughts of succession at business and office. We are not at all concerned about those poor kids engaged in work at such a tender age just to earn two square meals everyday. That’s not our responsibility, right! Let the government take care of all these issues and you can’t even spare a second. Who will address the core issues of child labour and basic education for children? Even I was indifferent to all these issues but an incident forced me to see beyond and think how I can take the responsibility and work on them. After the death of Meenakshi’s father, she and her mother left their village in Nagpur to find jobs in Mumbai as domestic helpers. She was just nine years old. Meenakshi soon found a job in the suburb of Mumbai, but was separated from her mother. She was constantly harassed by her employer and even subjected to verbal abuse. I was moved by her plight and came across a NGO, Tarang that tries to make a difference in the lives of the poor kids in Mumbai by providing them free education and other basic amenities. With the help of Tarang I was successfully able to remove Meenakshi from her job. She was keen to continue her education and went back to school.
